About Infant Massage

Vimala McClure founded the IAIM in 1981 after spending time in India in the 70's working in an orphanage.  She experienced the benefits of massage first hand when she succumbed to Malaria, and was massaged back to health by the women in the village.  One day she witnessed a young mother sitting in the dirt with her baby across her knees. She was massaging and singing to him. Vimala realised there was so much more to life than material wealth and that by massaging your baby you could offer such love and security. All that a baby needs.  And so this was her vision.

After having her own children, massaging them regularly and seeing the benefits for herself, she developed a routine of massage and went on to set up the IAIM (International Association of Infant Massage). For Vimala's full and inspirational story visit http://www.iaim.org.uk.

Infant Massage is a wonderful way to spend and enjoy time with your baby.  We all lead such hectic lifestyles these days and if you are like me, you’re probably trying to do too many things at the same time. Infant Massage is a time just for you and your baby, where you can forget all about your chores and outside world and just lose yourself in your baby, giving all your time, attention and love to your little one.

It's wonderfully relaxing for both you and your baby, and is an age old tradition that many families across the world before us have enjoyed and benefited from.

The lists of benefits for both you and your baby are endless.  I have included many of them below.  Remember - Massage is fun too.

Enhances bonding

Aids sleep

Helps colic

Helps constipation, wind and digestion

Relieves teething discomforts

Improves skin condition

Helps relax you and your baby

Improves blood circulation

Increases body awareness

Helps you to read and understand your baby's cues

Helps with cold congestion

Helps to tone muscles

Stimulates production of Oxytocin - a hormone which can be produced by both male and female persons during massage. It is useful as a pain reliever and has a calming effect on the person.
